I've wanted to do this for quite a while now. I'm creating a 70s Disco Classics Show that will include some of the biggest disco tunes of that decade. To kick off my 70s show will be a fantastic new medley featuring 4 classic 70's hits - Earth Wind & Fire's "September"; Barry White's "See The Trouble With Me"; The Isley Brothers "Harvest For The World" and The Trammps "Disco Inferno". I'm in rehearsal as we speak, and hopefully in the next couple of weeks I will roll out a taster (after my jazz sets) of my forthcoming 70s show with the medley. This should be great fun!
I'm also toying with the idea of adding to my backing tracks live sax, congas, violin, bass guitar players onto my current jazz set...OR creating a more spectacular dance oriented cabaret style show for the jazz concerts. I'm in talks with the creators of Visa2Dance about this. I shall keep you posted.

How to Build Timber into Your Vocal
Working with your lower register to build some timber into your vocal is key to your singing success. I've seen singers make the same mistake time and time again, they jump straight onto a higher octave from the get-go, thereby limiting their range. To improve your range, use your lower register (your deeper, speaking voice)! One of my main tasks when teaching voice at my studio is to help my students find that missing link. Imagine yourself climbing a flight of stairs and instead of stepping on every single step on the way up, you jump a few as you ascend. When you're not connecting your notes with every step from the ground up, your vocal flow becomes erratic; your vocal range becomes very limited; and you lose that vocal control you could've easily had.

International Jazz Appreciation Month Comes to Dar
Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) is a music festival held every April in the United States, in honor of jazz as an original American art form. JAM was created by John Edward Hasse, PhD, curator of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Jazz Appreciation Month was created to be an annual event that would pay tribute to jazz as both a living and as a historic music. Schools, organizations, even governments, celebrate JAM with events ranging from free concerts to educational programs. The first year was 2001, and initial funding was provided by the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. (Miss Fitzgerald's archives are housed at the Smithsonian).
The 1st Dar Jazz Event will feature US jazz artists Bobby Ricketts, Mo Pleasure and a host of local artists and bands. And also, in Celebration of International Jazz Appreciation Month, Dar es salaam's popular restaurant and lounge SWEET EAZY Oysterbay Presents Smooth 'n Funky-JazzMatazz with 102.6 Choice FM Sunday Jazz Presenter playing funky jazz music to groove to, and Live Performance by JOETT... singing unforgettable classics from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s on Friday April 15th. The perfect after-Bobby-Ricketts-concert-after-party bash!

Singing: How to Eliminate the Strain in Your Voice
If you're singing with a strained voice and you can actually feel pain around the throat area, there's something wrong with your placement. In that, you're probably recruiting other muscles to produce the sound. You don't have to! Here's a quick way to rectify any placement problems you may have.
Try saying AAAAA in your speaking voice, otherwise referred to as your chest voice. Once you've mastered that, start to work your way up the scale with AAAA gradually going up to a point where your voice breaks and switches over to your second voice (the falsetto area). If you're doing this correctly you should notice that there is no pain in the throat... because your placement is right. Now try to apply this technique to singing ANY song. Enjoy!

Saturday Night Jazz Chugging Along Nicely
Another gig this weekend. How time flies. I'm into my third public appearance in as many weeks. The idea is to push this through to becoming a weekly Saturday Night Jazz event. We're still looking for more sponsors to keep this going. The attendance numbers are certainly growing. We're onto a good thing here. I think Dar is loving this. My audience last Saturday had me do multiple encores...it was simply amazing and unexpected. Thanks to all of you for your support AND for bringing along your friends to the gig. Hope to see you all again this Saturday 26th March 2010.

Jazz & Blues Bar Gig @ Harbour View Suites Hotel
I debuted at the Jazz & Blues Bar at Harbour View Suites last night. What a fabulous venue. Their New Orleans style room looks amazing after sundown and the view of the harbour is simply breathtaking. It's a shame not a lot of people go there. Folks, you don't know what you're missing. This bar is awesome. There's nothing like it in this town. Nothing.
I sang thirteen classics plus my new single, enjoyed every minute. Thanks to all of you for coming (you know who you are); and thanks to my sponsors Business Times, Times 100.5 FM, Majira, Harbour View Suites and DarCity Promotion for making this event possible. Hope to see you again next time.
