The Queen Of British Soul Mica Paris "So Good" On Boogie

On today's 70s disco 80s pop retro radio show -- believe it or not, it’s SOUL WEEKEND on BOOGIE...as we bring you the 1988 debut album SO GOOD from The Queen of British Soul Mica Paris in the first hour; and in the second hour we’ll play the Mica Paris SOUL CLASSICS album from 2005, covering a selection of some of the greatest soul music ever written: from the likes of Smokey Robinson, Al Green, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Elvis Presley and Jimmy Ruffin...ALL performed by Mica Paris! So sit back and enjoy soul music from one of my favorite artists. It’s all happening right here on Times 100.5 FM.

Mica Paris (born Michelle Wallen, 27th April 1969, in South London) is an English soul singer, presenter on radio and television and occasional actress. In 1988, she released her debut, platinum-selling album So Good with 4th & Broadway when she was 19 years old. "My One Temptation" was the lead single. This led to a collaboration with American soul singer Will Downing on a cover version of a classic "Where Is the Love", made famous by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack in the early 1970s.

Mica is just finishing her 8th studio album, which has been produced by the legendary Rod Temperton. Rod wrote ‘Thriller’ and other songs on Michael Jackson’s record-breaking album, produced by Quincy Jones. Rod has achieved both chart and award success with George Benson and many other music icons. Mica is very excited about this album, due for release in January 2013.

Mica Paris will be performing at the Jazz Cafe in London on New Year’s Eve, where also, the King of British Soul Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B will be djing into the wee hours of 2013.

Earth, Wind & Fire to Electrify Retro Radio Show Boogie

On today’s show: I'll be featuring BOOGIE WONDERLAND: THE BEST OF EARTH WIND & FIRE. In the late 70s, Earth, Wind & Fire were the supergroup of soul. Few groups encapsulated pure joy on stage and on record as they did; and the group’s story is that of their leader and producer, Maurice White. Although his parents wanted him to be a doctor, when Maurice White enrolled at the Chicago Conservatory Of Music to become a music teacher, his life changed.

Born in Memphis, he’d sung in choirs since his childhood. He took up drums as a teenager and played in a local band with Booker T Jones, who would later form MGs, and David Porter who would write Sam and Dave’s biggest hits with Isaac Hayes. But when he was in Chicago, he was asked to drum on a Betty Everett session for Vee Jay Records and his skill led to more gigs and pretty soon, he ended up as a session drummer for Chess, playing on the label’s most memorable 60s sides. In 1967, he was a member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio.

A trip to the Middle East would awaken White’s interest in metaphysical philosophy. By the end of the sixties, White, his bassist brother Verdine, and a group of like-minded individuals set about forming an outfit that chimed with the times. The original title of the Salty Peppers fell by the wayside in favor of an adaptation of the three elements in White’s birth sign, Sagittarius earth, air and fire.

They relocated to Los Angeles and provided the music for Melvin Van Peebles’ ground breaking blaxploitation epic, Sweet Sweetback’s Badassssss Song. Signing to Warner Brothers, they went to cut two albums of dense, jazzy, funk-driven soul. Earth, Wind and Fire spawned the minor hit Love Is Life and The Need Of Love featuring the Sherry Scott-sung I Think About Loving You.

White decided to disband Earth, Wind and Fire and regroup. He recruited Philip Bailey whom he’d met on the road leading his band Friends And Love, and some hot new players including saxophonist Ronnie Laws. Signing to Bob Cavallo and Joe Ruffalo’s management stable, they began to play to rock audiences. A slow-building crossover began.

The group were signed to CBS by Clive Davis, who’d seen their incredible act live. Last Days And Time from 1972, shows this new approach – hard driving jazz-influenced jams are very much in evidence, but new additions like Bailey’s sweet falsetto on Make It With You showed the direction the group would take. Head To The Sky continued this run of success, while 1974’s Open Our Eyes went to No1 on the soul charts and reached the US Top 30.
That’s The Way Of The World, the soundtrack to a little-remembered film from 1975 in which they starred alongside Harvey Keitel, was the album that made them American superstars. It contained three of their greatest songs – Reason, Shining Star—a No 1 soul single—and the blissful, floating groove on title track.

By later 70s, Earth, Wind & Fire were fully established in the US and increasingly in the UK, with a stage act that combined White’s serious study of Egyptology with, well, lots of space effects and levitation. A young David Copperfield worked on the shows. White was also an in-demand producer and oversaw notable hits for Deniece Williams (Free) and the Emotions (the irresistible The Best Of My Love).

By 1978’s All n’ All, the group had crossed over to white rock audiences, who, wanting to lump them in with disco, were subsequently amazed at their ability and showmanship. “All n’ All is flashy, bright and fanciful,” Rolling Stone magazine said, unsure whether to sneer or cheer. I Am will be the album that everyone remembers, given a pop sheen by co-writers David Foster and Alee Willis. Written at the height of disco, and released in 1979, it presented a confident, joyous sound – Boogie Wonderland a duet with the Emotions, was an enormous world-wide hit while After The Love Has Gone gave them a ballad to rival the Commodores’ then-contemporary successes.

Aside from 1981’s triumphant Let’s Groove and Raise, it was never quite the same again. The band took a hiatus while Bailey went solo, scoring a world-wide smash with Easy Lover, his duet with Phil Collins, and White hit the US charts with his update of Ben E King’s Stand By Me.

In 1996, Maurice White retired from the road, leaving Bailey to lead EWF, while White kept an eye on proceedings in the studio. The band still delights audiences the world over, and in 2009 they performed at the White House Governors’ Dinner, the first formal White House dinner hosted by President Obama. “When they start to look back at the history and…at our records and attendance as far as live performances, you have to give us credit,” White said in 2001. “I think overall we made a helluva contribution to the music scene in the sense of creating change, doing things in a different way, and staying true to the music.

80s Pop Group Five Star to Feature On Boogie

On today’s show we’re featuring 5 Star The Greatest Hits compilation album with all of their greatest hits: System Addict, The Slightest Touch, Find The Time, All Fall Down, Let Me be The One and much much more… and we’re taking a trip down memory lane with 3 VERY special guests in the studio today: Isla Gilmore (the biggest 5 Star fan I know); Swahili blues artist Leo Mkanyia; and writer and budding singer Caroline Uliwa. Gosh, what a line-up! I’m honored and excited to have you guys back in the studio. And tonight, the follow-up nu disco single Color Me Beautiful by Joett with B Side bongo disco track Girls Girls Girls will premier on Boogie.

Five Star were one of the success stories of the mid 1980s. Often dubbed “The British Jacksons”, they were seldom off our TV screens and rarely out of the charts, notching up 15 Top 40 UK hits and selling millions of albums in the process. Born in Romford Essex, Deniece, Doris, Lorraine, Stedman and Delroy were the talented offspring of Buster Pearson, a professional guitarist who’d performed with Wilson Picket, Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff in the 1960s. His daughters persuaded him to let them record “Problematic”, a song he had recently written and put it out on his new label Tent Records. Although the single failed to chart it showed promise and Buster decided to manage the group full time. Expanded to a five piece with the inclusion of their two brothers, Buster managed to secure a deal for the group with RCA.

The first two singles under the new deal struggled to chart but their next release “All Fall Down” finally dented the Top 20 in May 1985 and was swiftly followed by Let Me Be The One” in July. The debut album “Luxury of Life” spawned seven singles in all, the most successful being “System Addict” which gave the group its first Top 5 hit reaching No. 3 in January 1986. The follow up album “Silk and Steel” proved equally popular. Climbing slowly to the top of the album charts it eventually went triple platinum and provided the group with a steady stream of hits including their biggest “Rain Or Shine” which peaked at No. 2. Continued success allowed the family to move from Romford to a mansion in Sunningdale where they installed a massive studio complex. 1987 saw Five Star winning a Brit Award for Best British Group and the release of their third album, “Between The Lines featuring 3 further Top 25 hits.

In 1988 following a six month break, Five Star relaunched themselves with a new raunchier leather look. The group’s fourth album “Rock The World” reached No. 16 with favorable reviews but disappointing sales. Their run of chart hits was finally over. The media were quick to pounce and the family rapidly became the subject of several stories concerning their financial stability.

Relocating to the US, the group signed for Epic Records and made 2 further albums “Five Star” and “Shine” but never managed to revive their flagging career. Although their chart days appear to be over, they are still performing as a trio (Stedman, Deniece and Lorraine) and have recently been on stage at Wembley Arena as part of the “Here and Now Tour”.

Color Me Beautiful: The New High Energy Disco Single from Joett

If ever I was REALLY excited about a new release, I think this would probably be it! I just love the look and feel of this one. I wrote the song almost two years ago and continued to improve on it up until the time I recorded the vocals in September 2012. What a long-winded journey this has been. A shout goes out to Max Rioba who recorded my voice at Authentic Records, Dar; and to Patrick Jonsson who produced, mixed and mastered the disco track at Ignition Sound, London, UK. You guys have been awesome. Patrick, always a pleasure working with you. Max, I hope this will be the beginning of many more projects to come.

Color Me Beautiful is probably the highlight of my recording career, if I'm honest. I can't see myself topping this (but you never know). It has everything I envisaged. Everything I ever wanted in a track. And paradoxically, suffice to say, rock meets disco quite aptly describes Color Me Beautiful. The vibe in that context is so very powerful. The single goes on CD and digital release with B Side nu disco track (labeled bongo disco) Girls Girls Girls on December 10th 2012.

Girls Girls Girls is particularly interesting, because I'd actually penned it for a boy band I was creating. But since that kind of fell through, I decided to record it myself. I had five boys in the original line-up and ended up with one. Reason? Well, they didn't quite cut the mustard in training. I now plan to regroup for 2013; audition a few boys for the part; and ultimately form the boy band whom, possibly, their debut single will be Girls Girls Girls. I'll play it by ear on this one and see what pans out.

Have a listen to the track on youtube, and watch out for the all-out-dance music video coming soon.

What's Happening On Boogie Radio Show

Last Sunday I ran Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah 70s New York Disco. It had been several weeks since I last played disco music from the 70s. We'd had a five week Chaka Khan album series that always included an 80s set in the second half of the show. So yeah, I feel great about revisiting the 70s with a full show dedicated to 70s disco. I also managed to squeeze one Nu Disco track at the very end of the show, which was nice. And that's why I thought, well, I'll dedicate the first hour of the show today to Nu Disco and then give you Boogie You Select Boney M Greatest Hits in the second hour, where you -- the listener, gets to select the playlist for the rest of the show.

We've got a new ad campaign in Business Times this week. The interesting part are the two male models sporting Boogie t-shirts in the ad campaign. Yes, Boogie now has the branded t-shirt, as it should. The plan is to get these in stores soon so you Boogie fans out there can buy yourselves these neat t-shirts with Boogie logo up front, and the boogie tagline in the back.

So catch you guys later, have a great weekend!

Singing Lessons: How to Hum Your Way to Better Projection

It really pains me to see how people struggle with projection. If you sense your voice is weak or that it has no power behind it when you sing certain notes, you'll need to take a quick step back to analyze how you sound. Take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror if you can while you're at it. I'm going to point out the most common reasons why good projection eludes a lot of people, and how to quickly fix the problem.

I don't know if you're aware of this, but when you speak your voice is at its most powerful. Why then do you struggle to project the same power when you sing? The reason is very simple. You're not using your speaking voice to sing. And I'll warn you right here. This is the hardest bad habit to kick. And here's another reason why you're experiencing the undesirably low levels of projection with your voice. You're lacking thrust. Yes, if you don't push it isn't going to happen. So how then do you fix this singing problem and break the cycle of bad habits that have plagued your advancement as a singer? Here's what I'll recommend you do. Read the full article here!

Boogie Retro Radio Show Turns One Year Next Month

Boogie has been on air for almost one year now. Amazing how time flies. And to celebrate, I've created a brand new ad campaign with models Dickson & Ashraf (signed to Joett Models), sporting Boogie t-shirts everybody wants to get their hands on. More on the where and how coming up soon.

This weekend on Times 100.5 FM from 6pm Sunday, I will run Greatest Hits by Chic & Sister Sledge -- The Remixes. Yes, you heard that right. ALL the hits remixed. The sound is amazing, the Boogie doesn't get any better than this. I'm really excited about this.
Expect some slamming 12" remixes of We Are family (Sister Sledge), I Want Your Love (Chic), Thinking Of You (Sister Sledge), Hangin' (Chic), Lost In Music (Sister Sledge), He's The Greatest Dancer (Sister Sledge), Good Times (Chic), Le Freak (Chic) plus a banging MEGACHIC medley remix by Chic. I tell ya, this Sunday will be extra special.

And in the weeks ahead, I'm toying with the idea of featuring Greatest Hits from Earth, Wind & Fire as well as that supergroup from the 70s -- Boney M. Oh, and there's MORE. Stay tuned to find out.

Be sure to tune in to Times 100.5 FM from 6pm Sunday East Africa Time, Or Listen live on stream at timesfm.co.tz For International listeners, view World Time Zone Map for current time in your area.

Singing Lessons: How You Breathe Is How You Sing Video Demo

G Fullah is a bongo flava artist signed to my record label -- Joett Music, as a solo artist. His debut single, currently in production, is scheduled for release in November 2012. In these vocal training exercises on my Advanced Program captured on video, pay attention to the way he uses his mouth to breathe before a note, and how he opens and spreads his mouth to scale a note. My point being, how you breathe is how you sing. I taught him well. So the next time you're puzzled as to why you're singing flat; puffing and panting; and not hitting your notes nice, clean and easy, take a closer look at your mouth! It's all in the breathing pattern. All you need to do is copy and paste that formula into your singing...and voila, you will be singing like a pro in no time.

Gladys Knight & The Pips Greatest Hits Feature On Boogie

On today’s show: we bring you  a selection of disco, soul and R&B classics from the album The Greatest Hits Gladys Knight & The Pips including the massive James Bond theme song License to Kill. And in the Airtel sponsored 2nd hour of the show from 7pm, expect some groovy Nu Disco.

Gladys Knight & The Pips were an R&B/soul family musical act from Atlanta, Georgia, active from 1953 to 1989. The group was best known for their string of hit singles on Motown's "Soul" record label and Buddah Records from 1967 to 1975, including "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (1967) and "Midnight Train to Georgia" (1973). The longest-lived incarnation of the act featured Gladys Knight on lead vocals, with The Pips, who included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and their cousins Edward Patten and William Guest, as backup singers.

Their biggest Motown hit was 1972's #1 R&B/ #2 pop hit "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)", which won the 1973 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus.

On the A&E Network television program Biography, Knight stated that she and the Pips were regarded as a second-string act, and that "Diana (Ross) & the Supremes, The Temptations, and Marvin Gaye were given all the hits, while we took the leftovers." In Knight's autobiography Between Each Line of Pain and Glory: My Life Story, she stated that Diana Ross had the group removed from being The Supremes' opening act on a 1968 tour for, according to Knight, being too good.

Many of Gladys Knight and the Pips' hits in the mid-1970s were written by country songwriter Jim Weatherly. Knight and the Pips charted with five of Weatherly's songs in 1973 and 1974: "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Neither One of Us," "Where Peaceful Waters Flow," "The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," and "Between Her Goodbye and My Hello."

Gladys Knight & the Pips embarked on their final tour in 1988 and disbanded upon its conclusion, as Gladys Knight decided she wanted to pursue a solo career. The Pips retired, while Gladys Knight began scoring hits of her own with singles such as "Men" (1991) and "I Don't Want to Know" (1994).

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation in 1998. Ms. Knight, now a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, continues to tour and record occasionally, and leads the Saints Unified Voices choir. Edward Patten of the Pips died in February 2005, of complications from his long bout with diabetes.

Gladys Knight & the Pips are ranked as the ninth most successful act in The Billboard Top 40 Book of R&B and Hip-Hop Hits (2005). They were also ranked #91 on VH1's Top 100 Artists of Rock n' Roll. In June 2006, Gladys Knight & the Pips were inducted into the Apollo Theater's Hall Of Fame in New York City.

In 2007, The Pips appeared in a commercial for the auto insurance company Geico. As Edward Patten had died two years prior, one of Gladys Knight's current backing singers, Neil Taffe, accompanied the remaining Pips.

Chaka Khan "I Feel for You" Album Features On Boogie

On today’s show we feature the fifth and final installment of the Chaka Khan 5 album series. The series is now in its fifth week, and today we present the album I Feel For You—the fifth solo album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan, released on the Warner Bros. Records label in 1984. Also coming up in the Airtel-sponsored second hour of the show we’ll bring you BOOGIE YOU SELECT where YOU get to select 80s groove n’ soul tracks you want me to play. To select your favorite tracks, stand by for alternative playlist coming up at the top of the hour at 7pm. Excellent from start to finish, this album went down in history as both a creative and a commercial success.

After having balanced her two simultaneous careers as a member of the band Rufus and a solo performer during the years 1978 to 1983, which culminated with the release of the final Rufus & Chaka Khan album Stompin' at the Savoy - Live after which the band dissolved, Khan recorded the album that was to make her a pop star with mainstream chart success; 1984's "I Feel for You".

The title track, "I Feel for You" was a sample-heavy cover of a 1979 Prince track, featuring Grandmaster Melle Mel on the classic Ch-ch-ch-chaka-chaka-chaka Khan rap intro and Stevie Wonder on harmonica (and also a sample from one of his first hits, "Fingertips") and saw Khan embracing high-tech funk, rap and hip hop and stands as one of her best known songs and her biggest commercial hit, reaching #3 on the US Pop Chart (and becoming Billboard's #5 song of the year in 1985), and was #1 US R&B, Dance, and UK singles. The song earned her a second Grammy Award in 1985 for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female.

The album reached #16 on Billboard's Album Chart, #4 R&B and #15 in the UK. Additional hit singles were "This Is My Night" (US #60, R&B #11, Dance #1, UK #14), "Eye To Eye" (UK #16 ) and the ballad "Through The Fire," which reached the US R&B top ten (#15), setting a then-record for most consecutive weeks on the Billboard R&B chart. "Through the Fire" also rose to #60 on the US Pop chart during a 19-week run on the Hot 100, and crossed over to the adult contemporary chart (#16) and charted at #77 in the UK. The I Feel for You album's second ballad, "Stronger Than Before" co-written by Burt Bacharach, Bruce Roberts and Carole Bayer Sager, was released as the fifth single in certain markets.

"I Feel for You", "This Is My Night" and "Eye To Eye" were released as extended 12" remixes in 1984, and other mixes were created for the 1989 remix compilation Life is a Dance - The Remix Project. The 1984 mixes by Arif Mardin and Russ Titelman remain unreleased on CD.

1985 saw two other songs by Khan released on other albums: "(Krush Groove) Can't Stop The Street" from the Krush Groove soundtrack (US R&B #18, UK #80), and "Own The Night", from the Miami Vice soundtrack (US Pop #57, US R&B #66).

Also coming up in the Airtel-sponsored second hour of the show we’ll bring you BOOGIE YOU SELECT where YOU get to select 80s groove n’ soul tracks you want me to play.

Chaka Khan is the eponymous fourth solo album. An excellent album from Chaka Khan, mixing tingling up-tempo tunes with her characteristic soaring, glorious vocals. "Got to Be There" reached number five on the R&B charts, but it actually wasn't the album's high point. That was the marvelous "Be Bop Medley," which later led hardcore jazz purist Betty Carter to proclaim Khan the one female singer working outside the jazz arena with legitimate improvising credentials.

Two singles were released from Chaka Khan: the Michael Jackson cover "Got to Be There" (US Pop #67, US R&B #5) and "Tearin' It Up" (US R&B #48), the latter also as a 12" single including an extended remix (- 7:21) as well as an instrumental version (- 8:07), both mixed by Larry Levan and included on Warner Music Japan's 1999 compilation Dance Classics of Chaka Khan. The album track "Slow Dancin'" was a funky ballad duet with the late Rick James. On Billboard's charts, the album reached #5 on Black Albums and #52 on Pop Albums. The "Bebop Medley" won producer Arif Mardin and Khan a Grammy Award in 1984 in the Best Vocal Arrangement For Two Or More Voices category.

Following the release of the Chaka Khan album and the greatest hits package The Very Best of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan later that same year Khan reunited with the band Rufus for one final album together, the double live/studio set Stompin' at the Savoy - Live (1983). Her next solo album I Feel for You -- which I will be featuring on Boogie next Sunday-- followed in 1984.

Despite its many accolades and artistic achievements the Chaka Khan album remained unreleased on CD in both the United States and Europe, and was only available as an import from Japan, until it was finally issued on CD in the UK in 2010 as part of a Five disc set containing Khan's first five solo albums.

Chaka Khan's What Cha' Gonna Do for Me Album On Boogie

On Boogie this Sunday, we feature the third installment of the Chaka Khan 5 album series. The series is now in its third week, and this time we present the album What Cha' Gonna Do for Me—the third solo album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan, released on the Warner Bros. Records label in 1981. Also coming up in the Airtel-sponsored second hour of the show we’ll bring you BOOGIE YOU SELECT where YOU select tracks you want me to play. Stand by for alternative playlist on the day, to select your favorite tracks.

What Cha' Gonna Do for Me is the Gold certified third solo album by Chaka Khan. Teaming again with Arif Mardin, slowly but surely the two began to craft an even more successful and innovative sound. This effort not only bests the work before it, but it is Mardin's most fulfilling production since 1974's Average White Band.

Three singles were released from What Cha' Gonna Do: the Beatles cover "We Can Work It Out" (US R&B #34), the McCrarys cover "Any Old Sunday" (#68) and the album's title track which became a number one hit on Billboard R&B Singles chart. On Billboard's charts, the album reached #3 on Black Albums, #33 on Jazz Albums, and #17 on Pop Albums. This would be Chaka's highest charting album until her 80's-era breakthrough I Feel For You. Its popularity among jazz audiences was likely due to the inclusion of the Dizzy Gillespie composition "Night In Tunisia" with a guest appearance by Gillespie himself as well as what today would be called a 'sample' of Charlie Parker's legendary four bar alto break from his 1946 recording of the title. Khan's vocal interpretation also features lyrics written by the singer herself. This album was nominated for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female in 1981.

Two tracks from the What Cha Gonna Do For Me sessions were only released as B-sides of singles; "Only Once" and "Lover's Touch", both remain unreleased on CD.

The instrumental intro to "Fate" has been sampled by a host of dance acts all through the 1990s and 2000s, most notably by Stardust on their 1998 hit single "Music Sounds Better With You" and a section of "I Know You I Live You" also features on "Bad Habit" by Onephatdeeva feat. Lisa Milett.

For reasons unknown, What Cha' Gonna Do For Me has only been re-issued on CD in both Europe and Japan. The album has yet to see a CD release in the United States, but did become domestically available digitally shortly after Khan won multiple Grammy awards for her 2007 album Funk This.

Coming up NEXT Sunday is the album Chaka Khan. The eponymous fourth solo album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan, released on the Warner Bros. Records label in 1982.

An excellent album from Chaka Khan, mixing tingling uptempo tunes with her characteristic soaring, glorious vocals.

Chaka Khan Gets Naughty On Boogie with Second Installment of 5-Album Series

Boogie didn't go on air last Sunday--it was Eid and we normally stay off air on the big holidays. Anyways, we're back this Sunday! And On today’s show we feature the second installment of the Chaka Khan 5 album series. The series is now in its second week, and today we present the album Naughty—the second solo album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan, released on the Warner Bros. Records label in 1980.

Also coming up in the Airtel-sponsored second hour of the show we’ll bring you 80s Groove n’ Soul tracks… including MASSIVE hits from Melisa Morgan, Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, Phil Fearon & Galaxy and MORE!

By the early '80s Chaka Khan and producer Arif Mardin had a great working relationship that was responsible for her hit solo debut, 1979's Chaka... Naughty presents the two in a more centered working relationship... most of Naughty represents Khan in a holding pattern, without much material to accommodate her widening range. That being said, Naughty is only a few songs away from being a bona fide classic.”

Three singles were released from Naughty: the club hit "Clouds" (penned by Ashford & Simpson who also wrote Chaka's "I'm Every Woman") (US R&B #10), "Get Ready, Get Set" (#48) and the big hit "Papillon (a.k.a. Hot Butterfly)" (#22). "Papillon" featured prominent background vocals from Luther Vandross, Cissy Houston, and her daughter Whitney. On Billboard's charts, the album reached #6 on Black Albums, #43 on Pop Albums.

Following the release of Naughty Khan reunited with Rufus for the recording of 1981's Camouflage. Her third solo album What Cha' Gonna Do For Me followed later that same year. Naughty finally saw a United States CD re-release in 1998 as part of the Warner Bros. Black Music Ol' Skool series.

Be sure to tune in to Times 100.5 FM from 6pm Sunday East Africa Time, Or Listen live on stream at timesfm.co.tz For International listeners, view World Time Zone Map for current time in your area.

Joett Mobbed at Epiq Bongo Star Search 2012 Auditions Dar

I paid a visit to Epiq Bongo Star Search 2012 Auditions in Dar with my own camera crew in tow. I had a couple of reasons for dropping by the event. I wanted to lend support to some of my students who were taking part in the competition, and I also wanted to help contestants prepare for the audition and to scout for talent. I'm creating a boy band, so I'm on the lookout for kids who'll fit the bill. Well anyway, as I went about my day I was mobbed for autographed copies of my comeback single "I Could Never Live (Without Your Love)." Yes, I had at least 200 CDs with my crew when I arrived, but how this frenzy happened so quickly took me quite by surprise.

I handed out my business card to one of the contestants and suddenly there were all these hands reaching out for my card. As I shelled them out--and I was running out fast, I decided to sign away a couple of CDs and that's when all hell broke loose. Suddenly, everybody wanted my autographed CDs and the saga continued. It was amazing. By the end of this fracas I'd signed and handed out over 200 CDs. I must say I was quite chuffed. It's nice to be appreciated. And then in the days that followed the calls started to come in from all these kids who'd grabbed my phone number. I'm now thinking of creating a 3-day training workshop to teach these kids the basics of singing. Enough to get them better prepared for the next Bongo Star Search competition. I've found a studio at slipway that's large enough to accommodate a lot of people (my own studio is too small for these numbers). What I need now is a sponsor to fund the event. So if you know of anyone who cares about the community and would like to give these kids a chance to learn their craft, please give me a shout. It's nice to give something back to the community.

Thanks for visiting my blog!

Singing Lessons: Are You Singing In One Straight Line?

Singing in one straight line is very typical of the untrained voice. To sound interesting when you sing, you’ll want to be able to work your voice around as many highs and lows within a note or a group of notes. Did that sound a bit like Chinese? I’ll explain.

Pick a word like Malaika from the song Malaika, for example. And try speaking the word. All is OK? Are you sounding normal like you would when you talk to someone? OK, now switch on the record button on your phone (assuming you have a voice recorder on your mobile) and sing the word Malaika using your speech level, first. Stop and play that back and ask yourself: are you singing on speech level or did you shoot up to a higher octave all of a sudden? Chances are you jumped several octaves to sing Malaika and if that is so, endeavor to work your way down to speech level. Do this exercise again, recording and playing back until you’ve got it right.

Going back to the point in this article: are you singing in one straight line? Well, if you don’t use your entire range from speech level upward, you are limiting your range. Hence, singing in one straight line is inevitable because you basically have no room to maneuver. So the next time you’re vocal range is maxing out prematurely, take a look at where you’re singing from. If you’re too high at your lowest end of the scale, take it down a few octaves to where it’s comfortable for you (as you would in speech) and then work your way upward. I hope that helps!

Thanks for visiting my blog!

40 Minutes with Chaka Khan: Original 5 Album Series (Part 1)

I’ve been dying to get this show on the road. Well, it’s here now. Thank goodness for that—delayed a few weeks mainly to allow for systems upgrades at Times 100.5 FM. But now, as the saying goes, it’s all systems go! Kicking off the Chaka Khan 5 album series this weekend is the album Chaka—the debut solo album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan, released on the Warner Bros. Records label in 1978. And I will be featuring this album in its entirety on 70s Disco 80s Pop retro radio show Boogie from 6pm Sunday this weekend, followed by some utterly sensational groove tracks from the 1980s in the Airtel-sponsored second hour of the show. Boogie airs every Sunday from 6pm till 8pm and is sponsored by Airtel, Business Times, Majira and SPOTIstarehe.

Still very much an integral part of Rufus, Chaka Khan set the charts on fire with her debut solo release. The first single was the R&B chart-topper "I'm Every Woman," an Ashford & Simpson track with Khan lighting up the lyric with her tantalizing vocals. Although Khan had much credibility from her association with Rufus, this album demonstrated that the dynamic vocalist could hold her own ground alone.

Two singles were released from Chaka, the first being her anthemic solo debut "I'm Every Woman", one of Khan's signature tunes alongside "Ain't Nobody" (1983) and "I Feel For You" (1984). The song has over the past three decades been re-released, remixed and covered a number of times, most notably by Whitney Houston in 1992 for the soundtrack album The Bodyguard, then featuring guest vocals by Khan herself and topping Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. A remix of Khan's original recording was also a Top Ten hit in the U.K. in 1989. The remix was included on the compilation Life is a Dance - The Remix Project, the title track of which was the second single release from the Chaka album in early 1979. The album also features the ballad "Roll Me Through the Rushes", never commercially released as a single but still receiving considerable airplay in 1979, as well as Khan's cover version of Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made To Love Her", re-titled "I Was Made to Love Him".

Following the release of the Chaka album Khan reunited with Rufus for the recording of 1979's Masterjam, produced by Quincy Jones. Her second solo album Naughty—which I will be featuring on Boogie next weekend, followed in 1980. The Chaka album was re-released on CD in the United States by the Warner Music Group in 1998.

To listen to superb, digitally re-mastered 70s disco 80s pop imports, tune in to Boogie on Times 100.5 FM, or listen live on stream at www.timesfm.co.tz from 6pm Sundays.
