Singing Lessons - How to Improve Your Breathing Technique

I've reviewed quite a few learn-to-sing CDs and one thing a lot of them seem to have in common is the lack of in-depth information on breathing technique. There's so much detail about breathing properly in order to sing properly that I feel is key to developing a great singing voice. I want to address this element of singing - beginning with this article. As a vocal coach I always tell my students, if you open your mouth to suck in that breath gradually as you drop the jaw, you will sing that way -- correctly. It's about developing a new habit and dispensing with old. There is a direct connection between opening your mouth to sing and opening your mouth to breathe. Get the breathing bit right, and you'll be singing like a pro in no time. This article will explore the pros and cons of breathing technique to help you not only sing better, but also sound a heck of a lot better than you ever did. It's all in the breathing.

Try stifling a yawn right now -- genuinely, whilst looking at yourself in the mirror. Notice the way your jaw drops. Now that's how you're meant to breathe when you sing. In through the mouth as you gradually drop the jaw. If you could create a breathing exercise where you breathe in through the mouth, as above, to the count of eight beats (put a piece of music on); hold your breath for eight beats; and then slowly exhale with a hiss (controlled) to the count of sixteen beats, and you're half way there. But do it properly, using the yawning example above.

As a vocal coach I always tell my students, the way you breathe is the way you're going to sing. If you breathe incorrectly, you will sing incorrectly. Here's a very simple example: With your teeth separated just two inches apart, try holding a note with the vowel "A" for several seconds. Now take a look at your mouth in the mirror. As you sing AAAAA start to drop the jaw gradually whilst maintaining the same amount of thrust and see how that alters your voice. You will notice that you begin to scale upward without really doing much at all. It is effortless. So here's the crux. When you learn to sing with the jaw-drop pattern as illustrated above, you will also be inadvertently learning to go up the scale by simply dropping the jaw--by creating more space down the throat--with the vowels A and E--or words that sound like that.

Here's a good example. Listen to the first verse of the song "Touch Me In The Morning" by Diana Ross. Note the second line "Then just walk away." Now try singing that line and when you sing the word AWAY drop the jaw gradually in the second 'A' and slowly close the mouth to fade the note. It would sound like an extended W-A-A-A-Y. This action produces a very refined articulation of the vowel. Dropping the jaw at the right time and at the right pace will produce a better-sounding vocal. Try working with the entire verse again, this time focusing on the breath intake spots before the note. Make sure you drop the jaw to breathe each time there's a gap that allows you to. And remember this. The pattern with which you open your mouth to breathe is the exact same pattern with which you should open your mouth to sing and articulate the vowel. The two work in synergy.

SHALAMAR Weekend On BOOGIE Radio Show 27th November

I've always wanted to do this...have a SHALAMAR weekend. Well, it's here! I will play Shalamar's greatest hits from 1977 to 1983 on today's BOOGIE radio show, followed by 80s groove tracks by various artists in the second hour. This should be interesting.

The band's record sales in the UK increased when Daniel demonstrated his body-popping dancing skills on BBC Television's music programme Top of the Pops, premiering the Moonwalk on television for the first time. Michael Jackson was a fan of the group, in particular, Daniel and his dance moves, after watching him on Soul Train. Jackson and Daniel met after, and Jackson took his then 12-year-old sister Janet to see Shalamar perform at Disneyland. Jeffrey Daniel co-choreographed Michael Jackson's "Bad" and "Smooth Criminal" videos.

Shalamar reformed in 2005, for the UK television series, Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, with original member Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett, and with new member Carolyn Griffey—a long time friend and fan of the original band, and daughter of Shalamar founder and Solar Record boss Dick Griffey. Carolyn's mother is Carrie Lucas for whom Watley sang backing vocals. They reached the grand finals of Hit Me, Baby, One More Time in May 2005, utimately losing out to Shakin' Stevens.

In October 2009, the reformed Shalamar of Hewett, Daniel and Griffey, performed as a part of "The Ultimate Boogie Nights Disco Concert Series", at IndigO2 within O2 Arena Entertainment Avenue in London. This prompted their return to the UK in April 2010 for a tour.

Hewett, Griffey and Daniel, returned to IndigO2 in October 2011.

Tune in to BOOGIE, the retro radio show on Times 100.5 FM Sundays 6pm till 8pm.

SHALAMAR Weekend Playlist November 27th 2011

1. The Second Time Around (12" MIX) 1979. The group scored a US million seller with "The Second Time Around".
2. Take That To The Bank (12" ― MIX) 1979
3. A Night to Remember (Album Version) 1982
4. There It Is (12" Mix) 1982
5. I Can Make You Feel Good (12" Mix) 1982
6. Friends (12" Mix) 1982
7. I Owe You One (Album Version) 1980
8. Right In The Socket (12" Mix) 1979
9. Make That Move (12" Mix) 1980

11. Disappearing Act (Album Version) 1983

13. Uptown Festival (12" Mix) 1977. Their first hit was the 1975 Motown-inspired production "Uptown Festival," and released on Soul Train Records the success of which inspired Griffey and Don Cornelius to replace session singers with popular Soul Train dancers Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel to join original Shalamar lead singer Gary Mumford.

Enjoy the show!

Boogie Retro Radio Show Snippets November 20th

80s Groove was born just as disco was on the way out. The beats were slowed down and the basslines cranked up, giving us dancefloor anthems that still resound today. It was one of the most funky and feel-good periods of club music, producing classics from the likes of Chaka Khan, Jocelyn Brown, Sister Sledge, The Jacksons, Luther Vandross and Earth Wind & Fire.

There were the artists that were feeling the love too, with classic slow jams from Marvin Gaye, Imagination, Jean Carn, The Jones Girls and The Isley Brothers. Back in the main room the birth of electro was being tried and tested and ultimatley given a massive tick with Indeep, Freez, Herbie Hancock, Shannon, D Train and Lisa Lisa.

Jazz funk stepped up via the soul weekender scene in some of the cooler resorts around the UK's east coast, and yet more anthems were appropriated by DJs of the day thanks to Tom Browne, Dexter Wansel and Keni Burke.

In today's show, we'll kick off with tracks from the 70s in the first segment and into 80s Groove in the second half of the program. Up to the very last minute--yesterday evening, I was quite undecided as to what I was going to play for you today. I have so much music...and I only have 2 hours on the show, so you can imagine. I'm sure you'll enjoy the music today, it will be an outright corker. Here's what to expect:

GIORGIO -- FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (R&B #2/ UK #16) [1977]
Giorgio Moroder: After producing "I Feel Love" for Donna Summer, I wanted to do my own song with me as the singer in the same style and technology with that synth bassline. I was quite happy with it but it did much better in Europe than the States.

CHIC -- DANCE DANCE DANCE (YOWSAH YOWSAH YOWSAH) (R&B #6/Pop #6/Disco #1/UK #6) [1977]

Alfa Anderson (Vocalist, classic-era Chic): There are so many favorites in this collection -- it could aptly be named the soundtrack of my life. But 'Dance, Dance, Dance' really was the penultimate change agent in my life. That's one of the first songs I sang background on for Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. I remember the session like it was yesterday. I walked into the studio with Luther Vandross and David Lasley not expecting to like what I heard. Boy, was I wrong. I was immediately captivated by the catchy lyrics, driving bass and rhythmic guitar licks. And wonder of wonders, I loved the background parts. Listening today, it stands the test of time. Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah!

Jody Watley: Chic are the best dance/pop/funk band of the era for me. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were the best.

Daryl Easlea (Music journalist & author of 'Chic: Everybody dance -- The Politics Of Disco'): In the year that Summer and Moroder were embracing the future, Chic were celebrating its past. Although not as lauded as "I Feel Live" this track is a groundbreaking record: its repetition, irony and detachment set it apart from its contemporaries. Its gimmick, the 'Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah' refrain, was taken from the 1930s Depression-era dance marathons where dancers would stay on the floor until near death to win a meagre sum of money. It showed how bittersweet Nile Rodgers as a lyricist could be.

GRACE JONES -- I NEED A MAN (POP #83/ DISCO #1) [1976]

Tom Moulton: As for Grace Jones, it was like watching someone grow up. She was determined to make it and nothing would stand in her way (just like the song says). She continued to improve as a singer and the attitude right along with it. I pushed her continually to make her sing better and I felt my ass was on the line as a producer to come up with a production I could be proud of.

Mr Pinks: Before working with Sly and Robbie, Grace Jones was a disco diva. With Tom Moulton on production duties, her debut album 'Portfolio' was a sure fire hit. The album is choc-full of classics including 'La Vie En Rose' and 'I Need A Man'. The subject matter of the latter perfectly matched her vampish man-eater character. Disco was meant to be fun and with Grace it was certainly that...and more!

There's more on the show. Tune in to Times 100.5 FM.

BOOGIE Radio Show: Background Snippets 13th Nov 2011

Here are some quick snippets on some of today's highlights on Boogie, the retro radio show on Times 100.5 FM.

Dan Hartman Vertigo/Relight My Fire was a number 1 Disco hit in 1979. According to Arthur Baker, Dan Hartman is one of disco's unsung heroes. This song featuring and amazing vocal from Loleatta Holloway, was one of a new wave of mind-blowing disco. Often covered, never bettered.

Pattie Brooks After Dark went to number 1 on the Disco charts in 1978. Pattie was in the unfortunate position of being on the same label (Casablanca) as the acknowledged queen of disco, Donna Summer, but she more than holds her own on this late-night cowbell-led disco epic. It has featured prominently in the movie 'Thank God It's Friday'. According to Bruce Sudano, being a Casablanca Records artist in the late 70s was like being at the center of the universe. It was worldwide but still family, a small group of people who were doing things that had global reach. Everyone - from the artists, arrangers, art directors, promo people & stylists to the president of the company -- was performing in a big way.

The Three Degrees The Runner. I was a member of The Three Degrees fan club, at the time, I remember, when they were Prince Charles' favorite group. Valerie Holiday (Vocalist, The Three Degrees): Working with Giorgio Moroder was great and different. We became more creative in our harmonies and were given our first chance to co-write as well, resulting in 'The Runner'. Sheila got the chance to work her magic on the lyrics and we did ours on vocals.

Diana Ross The Boss (R&B #1/Pop #1/UK #40 in 1979). 'The Boss' by Diana Ross is for many die-hard fans like me probably her best solo work. Ashford & Simpson brought out a grittiness and soul that was previously untapped. Ashford & Simpson really knew how to get the most out of an artist. This may be a career best for Diana Ross.

Donna Summer Last Dance (R&B #5/Pop #3/ Disco #2 1978).
Paul Moroder: Paul Jabara and Bob Esty had a good idea about the arrangement. I recorded Donna's vocals in Europe. As always, it went very quickly as Donna is a great singer and needs few takes. She didn't want to stay in the studio for long and she rarely came back and redid anything. We felt the feeling was there.
Candi Staton: She had such a wonderful soft feminine tone and she could do no wrong. When that song came on you could not beat me to the dance floor.

RCA Shuts Down Jive and Arista Records

It looks like one record company has called it quits and will focus on one specific genre- rock. They admit to massive lay offs and cut backs in recent years and have to start reinventing their music company and this includes dissolving its labels.

The labels that served as the home to artists such as Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and R. Kelly are soon to be no more. Recently installed RCA Records CEO Peter Edge and President/COO Tom Corson officially announced the end of the legendary Arista and Jive Records. J Records, which was created by Clive Davis in 2000, is also done for. Read the full article here!

What Went On Inside TIKISA Shoot in Pictures

TIKISA is going well, I'm glad to say. I think its popularity is growing steadily week on week, and the dancers are getting better and better with every show. I am truly amazed and proud of these kids. Considering none of them had previous experience in salsa, rhumba and merenge ... this is impressive! I just want to share with you SOME images from last week's episode. There's one of me posing for the camera with fellow judges QSK (far left) and Sauda Simba. In another blog post today (the Swahili version), there's a group shot of ALL the contestants who participated in the competition last week... by which time three couples had already been eliminated from the competition. Sad to see them go, but this is, after all, a competition. Winner takes it all!

TIKISA THIS WEEK

We shot the next episode YESTERDAY. Loads of great fun. INCREDIBLE show. Our competitors have moved up yet another gear. You will be AMAZED. I know I was. The heat is on. "Chungu kimechemka!" Watch your TV screens this weekend, Saturday 10pm on ITV.

So until next time, please stay tuned to what's happening on TIKISA right here on Joett Music blog! I promise I will do my best to keep you updated.

TIKISA "Let's Dance" Premiers On ITV

It has been a hectic few weeks. Dance, vocal coaching, creating a new radio show and much more besides. I haven't had time to blog. Bizarre. And now I'm sitting on the judge panel for the new dance competition show TIKISA "Let's Dance" on ITV, which premiered last night. Another 11 episodes to go... and filming each week. I enjoyed the show. There are some very talented kids on the show. I shall look forward to viewing the next installment this coming Saturday on ITV.

My critically acclaimed single "I Could Never Live (Without Your Love)" is being remixed into the 70s by my London producer Patrick Jonsson. It takes on a 70s disco beat reminiscent of the group Shalamar. I had to lay down new vocals to it last week (Saturday & Sunday)...for which I flew in my Nairobi producer Ken Kanyeria to come and record my voice. I like the outcome. The sound files are now in London for further production, mixing and mastering. I can't wait to re-release this single. Coming very soon. Watch this space!

Until next time, take care!

Joett Dance into Shape Class Goes 70s Disco

Yesterday's dance-for-exercise class was my best ever! I decided to run 70s music by Shalamar and it simply worked wonders. Quite interesting how it happened because, you have no idea how many times I've carried that CD to the studio but didn't play it. Yesterday, I took nothing else...so I had to play it. It was all I had. And good job I did. It was an amazing class.

There's something about 70s music that has a beat and vibe SO good for dancing. Yesterday was bubbly, fluid, fun and not as rigorous as my other classes. How I move is inspired by the music itself. 70s music kinda slows me down, which gives me more room to maneuver and to effectively workout the entire body with a lot more flexibility moves thrown into the mix. They loved it! And so I'm sticking with the 70s from here on out. Welcome to my all new 70s Disco Dance Class!

Venue: Nanasi Studios, Oysterbay Shopping Center, Dar es salaam.
Schedule: Tuesdays 6pm, Thursdays 6pm and Saturdays 10am (advance bookings only for Saturday).

See you there!

Nanasi Dance Studio Opens in Dar es salam Friday 1st July

Nanasi Dance Studio opens at the Oysterbay Shopping Center in Dar es salaam on Friday 1st July 2011. It is a lovely studio. Come and take a spin, you'll love it! I know you will. I'll be running dance-for-exercise classes there. Just call to make a booking. My scheduled days at Nanasi are Tuesdays 6pm, Thursdays 6pm and Saturdays 10am. All subject to change. Let's roll this out and I shall keep you update.

What I like about dancing is it's very effective for weight-loss IF you take it seriously and apply yourself. Yes, it probably isn't easy work but when you stick to the plan and don't procrastinate you reach a point where your body tells you "I wanna dance!" And besides, let's face it, it is great fun. In my dance class, it can get hectic. But you may slow down if you want. Take baby steps. When your body gets used to the dance routine you WILL be able to do more. So take it easy, but most importantly, enjoy!

See you there!

Joett Valetine's Day Video Re-Uploaded to YouTube After Technical Glitch

The sound on my YouTube video was too loud and distorted. My videographer seems to have pumped up the volume when they absolutely didn't need to. Eventually, I got a techie friend of mine to remove the sound and to reload it properly. It's now up on YouTube ... sounding like it does on the CD -- as it should!

Michael Jackson's Second Anniversary : Gary, Ind. Pays Tribute

Michael Jackson's childhood hometown of Gary is preparing a memorial tribute to be displayed on the second anniversary of his death on Saturday at the house where he grew up.

Gary officials are calling the remembrance a "Tribute to Michael" at the house that the Jackson family moved out of after the Jackson 5 found fame. The Post-Tribune of  Merrillville reported that the second anniversary of Jackson's death will be marked with Jackson's music, vendors and a candlelight vigil at dusk. Read the full article here!

RARE Michael Jackson photos I came across are truly amazing AND indeed rare. Take a look at the one in which Michael steps out of a swimming pool with only his swimming trunks on. See Micheal Jackson's rare photos here!

Salsa Dancing 101: Instructional Salsa Dance Step-By-Step Course

Last week was one of those weeks from hell for me. I spent hours on end Monday through Saturday (with the exception of Wednesday) training 22 dancers in preparation for a demo/pilot video shoot that took place on Saturday. Don't get me wrong, I was honored to be called for the job...a production for a show coming to ITV, and it was a heck of a lot of fun, but it got to a point I had to cancel some of my own dance and singing classes to accommodate them. Good job it's all done and dusted now. Well, for now. I was responsible for pop, Sammy Cool and Bud Spencer took care of the rumba. More on this later.

My dance-into-shape classes are still running, although attendance isn't where it should be. I know it's hard work guys, but if you want to look good, feel great and lose some extra pounds it can't be easy. You're going to have to put in some work. Well, for those of you who'd rather stay home and try something on your own, I'm going to recommend you try Salsa Dancing 101: Instructional Salsa Dance Step-By-Step Course.

Have fun and catch up with you next time!

Amazing Grace Singer from Zimbabwe Confined to a Wheelchair

Finally, after five months of surgery and rehabilitation in Denver, Prudence Mabhena can sit up straight in her wheelchair. And that's enough for the singer to belt out an amazing "Amazing Grace."

Walter Isenberg, president and chief executive of Sage Hospitality in Denver, donated the suite in his hotel to Prudence because, among other things, he feels passionate about helping African kids in need.

"It's amazing that someone with her physical challenges would be so positive about life," he said. "And it's a lesson for all of us. We take all sorts of things for granted. We are spoiled."

This is such an amazing story, it'll make you cry. Prudence Mabhena, a singer from Zimbabwe, who has endured the impossible and who now writes her own music and spends time in recording studios and on stages, the question is: How much more can she thrive?

Despite all she has endured, Mabhena worries that life might become too easy. She struggles to remain humble.

"So many times when I went through pain, I thought it was God's way to tell me not to complain," she said. "I would meet people with more problems than me, and still I could complain and complain and complain."

Read the full story Prudence Mabhena's amazing journey touches Denverites' hearts

Catherine Zeta-Jones Didn't Complain About Depression

Oscar-winner Michael Douglas, who completed chemotherapy for throat cancer last November, said of his wife CATHERINE Zeta-Jones that she never “complained” about being depressed.

The Welsh actress — who earlier this year spent time as an in-patient at the Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut, to deal with Bipolar II disorder — didn’t admit her struggle to her spouse, who was suffering with throat cancer, but is now getting better. To find out more on this story read the article Catherine Zeta-Jones didn't complain about depression.

Douglas attributed the cancer to a combination of stress, his previous alcohol abuse, and years of heavy smoking. Which brings me to the main thrust of this blog post, and as a singer and vocal coach who advocates healthy living to preserve the throat, smoking and excessive drinking DOES affect the throat! Worst case scenario is a bout with cancer as a result of these excesses. Two weeks ago I lost a close family friend to throat cancer (no, she didn't smoke). I can only imagine what Catherine was going through as did the family of the deceased.

Thanks for dropping by!

Creating a 70s Disco Classics Show

I've wanted to do this for quite a while now. I'm creating a 70s Disco Classics Show that will include some of the biggest disco tunes of that decade. To kick off my 70s show will be a fantastic new medley featuring 4 classic 70's hits - Earth Wind & Fire's "September"; Barry White's "See The Trouble With Me"; The Isley Brothers "Harvest For The World" and The Trammps "Disco Inferno". I'm in rehearsal as we speak, and hopefully in the next couple of weeks I will roll out a taster (after my jazz sets) of my forthcoming 70s show with the medley. This should be great fun!

I'm also toying with the idea of adding to my backing tracks live sax, congas, violin, bass guitar players onto my current jazz set...OR creating a more spectacular dance oriented cabaret style show for the jazz concerts. I'm in talks with the creators of Visa2Dance about this. I shall keep you posted.

How to Build Timber into Your Vocal

Working with your lower register to build some timber into your vocal is key to your singing success. I've seen singers make the same mistake time and time again, they jump straight onto a higher octave from the get-go, thereby limiting their range. To improve your range, use your lower register (your deeper, speaking voice)! One of my main tasks when teaching voice at my studio is to help my students find that missing link. Imagine yourself climbing a flight of stairs and instead of stepping on every single step on the way up, you jump a few as you ascend. When you're not connecting your notes with every step from the ground up, your vocal flow becomes erratic; your vocal range becomes very limited; and you lose that vocal control you could've easily had.

International Jazz Appreciation Month Comes to Dar

Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) is a music festival held every April in the United States, in honor of jazz as an original American art form. JAM was created by John Edward Hasse, PhD, curator of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Jazz Appreciation Month was created to be an annual event that would pay tribute to jazz as both a living and as a historic music. Schools, organizations, even governments, celebrate JAM with events ranging from free concerts to educational programs. The first year was 2001, and initial funding was provided by the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. (Miss Fitzgerald's archives are housed at the Smithsonian).

The 1st Dar Jazz Event will feature US jazz artists Bobby Ricketts, Mo Pleasure and a host of local artists and bands. And also, in Celebration of International Jazz Appreciation Month, Dar es salaam's popular restaurant and lounge SWEET EAZY Oysterbay Presents Smooth 'n Funky-JazzMatazz with 102.6 Choice FM Sunday Jazz Presenter playing funky jazz music to groove to, and Live Performance by JOETT... singing unforgettable classics from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s on Friday April 15th. The perfect after-Bobby-Ricketts-concert-after-party bash!

Singing: How to Eliminate the Strain in Your Voice

If you're singing with a strained voice and you can actually feel pain around the throat area, there's something wrong with your placement. In that, you're probably recruiting other muscles to produce the sound. You don't have to! Here's a quick way to rectify any placement problems you may have.

Try saying AAAAA in your speaking voice, otherwise referred to as your chest voice. Once you've mastered that, start to work your way up the scale with AAAA gradually going up to a point where your voice breaks and switches over to your second voice (the falsetto area). If you're doing this correctly you should notice that there is no pain in the throat... because your placement is right. Now try to apply this technique to singing ANY song. Enjoy!

Saturday Night Jazz Chugging Along Nicely

Another gig this weekend. How time flies. I'm into my third public appearance in as many weeks. The idea is to push this through to becoming a weekly Saturday Night Jazz event. We're still looking for more sponsors to keep this going. The attendance numbers are certainly growing. We're onto a good thing here. I think Dar is loving this. My audience last Saturday had me do multiple encores...it was simply amazing and unexpected. Thanks to all of you for your support AND for bringing along your friends to the gig. Hope to see you all again this Saturday 26th March 2010.

Jazz & Blues Bar Gig @ Harbour View Suites Hotel

I debuted at the Jazz & Blues Bar at Harbour View Suites last night. What a fabulous venue. Their New Orleans style room looks amazing after sundown and the view of the harbour is simply breathtaking. It's a shame not a lot of people go there. Folks, you don't know what you're missing. This bar is awesome. There's nothing like it in this town. Nothing.

I sang thirteen classics plus my new single, enjoyed every minute. Thanks to all of you for coming (you know who you are); and thanks to my sponsors Business Times, Times 100.5 FM, Majira, Harbour View Suites and DarCity Promotion for making this event possible. Hope to see you again next time.

Temptations Revue Concert to Benefit S.C. State Students

I've been touched by this. I feel this could be done in Tanzania -- or in any country. Let me know what you think? The harmonies of a classic Motown group will pave the way to meet the financial needs of South Carolina State University students. Chapter member Willie Bamberg conceived the idea after attending the group's show in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., last July. He said concert proceeds can help students pay incidental expenses. "We have a lot of students who get hit with unanticipated fees, usually around $100 to $200," Bamberg said. "It's not a lot of money, but often they can't afford the extra amount. Because of that, they aren't able to pay and have to leave school. "The stats show the ones we lose often don't come back. This money will help bridge that gap. (The band) wants to do this and give back to the community. We want to take advantage of it." Read the full article here!

Jazz for Relief Night at Harbour View Suites Hotel

Yes, it has been a while since my last post. Well, I have been busy. Teaching voice; a new record to promote; and the song goes on. I had East Africa TV's Nervana crew here yesterday filming one of my vocal coaching classes and then an interview with me thereafter. It was wonderful. Really nice people. Lotus, you're awesome! The program, I'm told, airs next Tuesday 1st March at 7pm...  and I believe there is a repeat on Sunday. Check your TV guide for updates.

Jazz for Relief -- Next week Saturday 5th March, if everything goes according to plan, I will perform a jazz set at the Jazz & Blues Bar located on the 9th floor at the Harbour View Suites Hotel on Samora Avenue, Dar es salaam. It will be a charity event we are naming Jazz for Relief Night in aid of the recent bomb blast victims in Gongo la Mboto. We're looking for sponsors. If you know anyone or any business that may be interested in sponsoring this event, please drop us a line. The idea is to host a jazz evening filled with fabulous entertainment and to raise funds for a worthy cause. We want to help. Musicians like myself will perform for free...as their contribution to the cause. We'd love to get items for auction on the night too. CDs, air tickets...anything you can think of. Let's do whatever we can to help.

Sincerely,

Escondido, CA (PRWEB) February 1, 2011 -- Joett, a Tanzanian singer songwriter and vocal coach who previously flew to London and Dubai to produce his debut single Afro Lover in 1996, has discovered a more cost-effective way to produce the high quality sound he was accustomed to, but without the long haul flights and travel expenses. Speaking of his forthcoming debut album Vintage In Color he says, “I will record the entire album long-distance, using the Internet. It’s so liberating.” Next up his marketing sleeve is a Valentine’s Day music video concept where he plans to invite shopping mall passersby and his fans around the world to face the camera and scribble the name of the one they love on a placard above the title of his new song “I Could Never Live (Without Your Love)” for inclusion in the new Joett music video. Wanna Send Valentine's Day Message in My Music Video?

Hi everyone! A lot has been happening SO fast! My song "I Could Never Live (Without Your Love)" has heaps to do about love, and so I've decided to give you a spot in my upcoming Valentine's Day video for YouTube, which will feature my new single and YOUR FACE and MESSAGE to the one YOU LOVE!

In this unique concept my crew and I will hit Dar es salaam’s largest shopping mall, Milimani City, to invite passersby (and YOU) to scribble the name of the one they love on a placard above the title of my new song “I Could Never Live (Without Your Love)” ... so their messages of love can appear in my new music video. I'm also inviting YOU to drop by at the Mall Saturday afternoon on February 5th. I'd love to meet you and to take a shot of you sending a Valentine's Day message to the one you love. Obviously, I will email you a link to the final video when it is complete...So you can send it to the one you love AND to your friends!

CLIPS BY EMAIL

Don't live in Dar es salaam? No worries. Take a small whiteboard. On the whiteboard in marker you will write "I Could Never Live Without Your Love!" Write the name of someone you love on the white board ABOVE the song title and hold it up (making sure all the text is big enough that it will show up in the video or photo). Have a photo or quick video taken of you holding the sign. That's it!

Send your clips/pics to info[at]joettmusic[dot]com and I will email you a link to the final video when it is complete.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Vocal Thrust: Practice Singing With 80s Star Princess

Princess is a British singer, who in the late 1970s worked with the group Osibisa. Her first solo album Princess (1986) was composed and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman which contained the single, "Say I'm Your Number One". I love this number. It has so much thrust..."Saaaaay I'm Your Number One" and I think, if you work this track you can very much improve your thrust. What I mean by thrust is: that extra push that sustains your vocal to make it sound fuller, with more timber; more va va voom (vroom). Please Google for lyrics and MP3 Download.

SINGING TIPS: Pay attention to the way she uses her voice. You will need to breathe before each note (if you're one of my students you'll know what I'm alluding to here). Check out that descending scale she applies to the word "one". Focus on the accelaration that preceeds some the high notes in this song, and give it all you've got. DON'T shout! It's not about shouting. If you're one of my students you'll know exactly what I mean by this. Any questions? Feel free to holla.

Enjoy!

Practice Singing With The Beatles "Yesterday" Reworking by 80s Star Stephanie Mills

When I was browsing Internet radio Jango, where my current pop single has received over 2,000 airplays, I stumbled upon an 80s pop star Stephanie Mills. Stephanie, a childhood friend of Michael Jackson, has an amazing voice. I haven't seen nor heard this woman since the 80s. So when I listened to her new single "yesterday" (on Jango), a remake of The Beatles smash hit, I was gobsmacked (and quickly bought the track off Amazon MP3)! It kinda reminds me of the origins of my new single -- Stephanie Mills rendition of "Yesterday" is simply guitar and voice. I love it!

SINGING TIPS: As you practice, please pay attention to the way she projects her voice; and the way she switches octaves. Make sure your breath intake is done wherever there is a break to do so. Steadily drop the jaw and drink that breath before each note. Please pickup the lyrics here and Google for MP3 download.

Enjoy!

Practice Singing With Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week in 1974, back in the day when they made extraordinary music. Like  it or not, this is an amazing song to train your vocals with. So much so that I now use this song to coach some of my students. Please have a listen to the marvelous Barbra Streisand in one of her best live performances of her career. See the way she expresses herself in demeanor -- and voice. You may download lyrics to this song from Seek Lyrics and Google for MP3 downloads of the song.

SINGING TIPS : Make sure you work your voice from the ground up. Use your range to deliver this song with depth, so that it doesn't sound like you're singing in one straight line. Your voice needs to peak and dip into your lower register flawlessly. Have fun, and let me know how you get on. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here. When you're confident enough to sing to the backing track of this classic number, it is available for download at Standardtrax

Enjoy!

Reinvented 90s Pop Sensation Joett, to Burn Up the Dance Floor at Colosseum Gym January 6th

Tomorrow, January 6th, I debut at the Colosseum Gym in Oysterbay as dance-for-fitness instructor and choreographer. I am SO excited. Rozalla, thanks for the autographed Best Of album you sent me in the post all the way from London. You are the best my dearest friend. You know I will always love you.

Guys, I will kickoff tomorrow's hectic fat burning DANCERCISE with sensational dance remixes from my friend Rozalla, Zambian born British Queen Of Rave, from her Best Of album. Rozalla toured with Michael Jackson on his "Dangerous" tour, opening all of his performances. I'll be spinning the remixes of her hit singles Baby, This Time I've Found Love; followed by the remix of new pop single "I Could Never Live (Without Your Love)" from Joett; and then on to smash hits from Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson, Ultra Nate, Cher and much much more. We're sure as hell going to be burning up the dance floor you guys...and getting in shape while we're at it! Isn't that like SO awesome? Imagine all the extra pounds gained from the holiday season melting away like magic...in my fast-paced dance class? So cool!

Come join the most fun way to get in shape, look good and feel great. It's all happening at Dar's premier gym -- the Colosseum.

Dance Schedule: Thursdays 9am, Saturdays 9am.
Open to Non Members ONLY for the DANCE classes.
Fees: Non members TShs10,000 / members TShs5,000.

Hope to see you there!

Joett Dance Studio Moves to Colosseum Gym

Hi everyone -- and a Happy New Year! What a way to start the new year...with a bang! I've moved my dance-for-exercise program to the Colosseum Gym in Oysterbay, starting this Thursday January 6th and Saturday January 8th, it all happens in their massive aerobics room upstairs. More space, more fun. To begin with, we're running twice a week (Thursdays 9am and Saturdays 9am); and hopefully add more slots over time.

It has been a hectic couple of weeks; I gave a jazz concert for a private 60th birthday party at a boutique hotel in Masaki December 28th; and there's a substantial amount of work I put in with the promo of my new single I Could Never Live (Without Your Love). I have been pretty busy. I signed a PR deal with a firm in the US the other day...and the song goes on. Enough about me. Hope to catch up with you guys (dancers) at the Colosseum Thursday and Saturday.
