If you’ve been reading my articles or perhaps you’ve read my book, you will by now be familiar with what singing in the mask is all about.
This short article will offer tips on why a resonant voice is so important for singers, and it begins with the art of placing your tone in the mask in voice training so that it resonates; extends your vocal range; and adds timbre and color to your tone.
And you’re going to be surprised to discover just how easy it is to develop a beautifully unique tonee, because already, you ARE unique—well, everybody’s voice is unique because our skulls are all unique… even in the case of identical twins, there is always a slight difference in the shape and size of the skull.
Why is the skull significant?
Because the voice resonates in the head and this is what creates a sound that is especially unique to every individual on the planet. To properly harness and develop this unique sound as a singer, the way to go about it is to master Speech Level Singing Technique.
There’s nothing complicated about this. It is just a combination of vocal exercises that will help to connect your bottom, middle and upper harmonic qualities in order to develop one strong and dynamic voice. I think that is the simplest way of putting this.

How to Set-up for Voice Lessons with a Coach on Skype
How to Set-up for Skype Voice Lessons with Joett
- I'll need your email address to send you some working files.
- You'll require two devices: a mobile phone and a laptop or PC. If you only have one device, then it needs to be connected to external Bluetooth speakers and I will cue the scales for you to repeat, and when you're proficient enough I will play the scales in real time.
- Download Skype to your phone and laptop or PC.
- Add my Skype ID 'tojona' so we can talk via free Skype to Skype.
- To playback the sound files I send you, one of your devices, say--your laptop needs to be connected to external speakers... like Bluetooth speakers or home theater.
- When you come on the Skype call make sure everything is ready: i.e. your music system is set up and the sound files are ready for use. Also, ensure your email is connected for easy delivery of additional working files to your inbox during the session. During the call, in addition to playing single-note-cues on the piano, I'll be recording a series of short piano scales which I will deliver in Skype chat window.
- Finding it hard to figure this out? Don't worry, we can do a trial run session.
My book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach contains over a hundred articles and tips for singers, and is available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu. Also included is my complete voice training audio product Joett Vocal Drills Vol. 1-7.

Africa Launches Newest Community Outreach Project for Singers
In recent months, a sixteen year-old boy named Tshiamo from South Africa, after finding me online, reached out for help .
In order for me to do a voice assessment, he sang a couple of lines from the John Legend song All Of Me, it wasn’t impressive, but I saw a lot of potential in his voice. He only needed the training.
He said that he really wanted to be a good singer. It was his dream, he said, but he couldn’t afford my fees. I went on to ask him what voice coaches in South Africa generally charged and he said they charged around US$35 an hour and that his mother simply couldn’t afford that. Mind you, I was asking for far less.
And so I offered to train him on pro bono via Skype. He couldn’t believe it. He sent me a voice note just to thank me (very sweet) and I could feel the emotion and excitement in his voice. He was SO elated!
It is this sort of reaction that spurs me on to keep helping people who’ve got the talent but cannot afford to hire a voice coach. The boy from South Africa came on board with a once-a-week Skype sessions schedule and his transformation is incredible. Everybody around him has noticed the difference in his voice, including all of his schoolmates and teachers. In fact, he is now regularly asked to sing solo at assembly in school.
This is just one of the many success stories from youngsters who’ve greatly benefited from my unconditional help and support. I do it for the love of helping others, but I know I can do even better with YOUR support.
And here’s how you can help.
I have just created a fundraiser project on crowd-funding platform Fundly, Hashtagged #VocalsQuickFixAfrica, and the aim is to raise money that will go towards providing private one-one-one voice lessons to young people in Africa, coupled with hosting Masterclass sessions in major cities across the African continent. Needless to say, donations will go towards covering logistical expenses and learning material.

How to Access the Mixed Voice, Explained in Layman Terms
If you’ve read my article How to Get a Complete Vocal Warm-Up in Just 12 Minutes you will already have an idea as regards perhaps the easiest and fastest way to get started with a regular voice training program.
Recently, someone in my Telegram group, Joett Voice Studio, wanted to know how to access the mixed voice.
And so today I want to talk a little bit about the mixed voice.
My response to my online student’s question was pretty simple... and it reads as follows.
It’s really about working on erasing that middle register, where usually the untrained voice will disconnect, to create one voice. But of course you have your lower, middle and upper registers but we’re just trying to create that seamless transition and connect them better.
And so, in my vocal warm-up exercises you will cover the mixed voice area of your range again and again and in so many different runs, that eventually you will strengthen that particular area and the transition through your mixed voice will become seamless.

Scientific Evidence Reveals "Fountain of Youth" Formula
Scientists have targeted a very powerful hormone responsible for human growth and cell regeneration that, once harnessed, has all the properties of a bona fide "fountain of youth."
It's known as "Human Growth Hormone" and it's an extremely important part of our body's functioning at the cellular level.
In fact, not only does HGH promote the growth and regeneration of cells; it also allows other vital functions in our bodies to occur, including...
Metabolism
Brain function
Sexual responses
Healing
Muscle growth
... and more.
However, as we age we experience a drop in HGH levels. All the normal results of aging occur in direct correlation to this drop in HGH.
For years, we've simply assumed that this is a natural part of the aging process. And we assumed there was nothing we could do about it.
But after a great deal of scientific research and clinical trials, we now know: We were wrong!
The Benefits of HGH
In study after study, the benefits of HGH are clear - and they are impressive.
HGH has been proven to have far-reaching effects, including all of the following:
... And more!
But How Does It Work?
In simplified terms, HGH is basically like sipping from a fountain of youth. When HGH levels are increased in your body, you literally turn back the clock to rediscover a more youthful you.
For example, here are a few of the benefits of HGH, with a quick explanation of HOW this little hormone can have such dramatic effects:
HGH can help you lose weight easily, and here's why: When you increase the levels of HGH in your body, you increase your metabolism (or metabolic rate). This means your body can process nutrients faster and more efficiently, which leads to rapid - and effortless - weight loss.
HGH can also help to improve your failing memory by rejuvenating the cells in your brain. With increased cellular health, your cognitive function (awareness, thinking, and memory) are improved.
The cell-regenerating properties of HGH mean that time can literally be turned back, reducing those fine lines and wrinkles and giving your skin the elasticity and healthy glow of your youth.
One of the biggest benefits of HGH is that it can directly impact your waning sex drive. As we age, our libido naturally drops - for some people, severely. There are a number of factors that cause this, including hormones, skin sensitivity, blood pressure, and more.
HGH improves all the key functions required to regain a vigorous, healthy sex life.
The many benefits of HGH are astounding. Treatment, however, is a little tricky. Let's have a look at some of the treatment options for HGH.
Treatment Options for HGH Therapy
Traditionally, patients in need of Human Growth Hormone treatments had to subject themselves to a course of multiple injections of HGH from the pituitary glands of cadavers.
While this treatment option was effective (if somewhat ghoulish), there were two major drawbacks:
For the average person suffering the ravages of aging, this form of treatment simply wasn't an option.
Another option that became available was to orally ingest human growth hormone. However, the molecular size of HGH and its incompatibility with the digestive system means that taking HGH by mouth simply doesn't work.
But a recent scientific breakthrough has made HGH accessible to everyone. The new method of treatment is not actually using human growth hormone itself.
Instead, it's a complex blend of proteins, amino acids, herbs, and other nutrients specially formulated to help stimulate your body to produce its own HGH.
The formula targets the anterior pituitary gland, causing it to produce and secrete more HGH into your body. The result is that your body's systems begin to improve and function like that of a much younger person.
To find out more about how you can stimulate the production of HGH in your body and combat wrinkles, muscle loss, weight gain, and a lagging libido today, go check out GenF20Plus.

How to Get a Complete Vocal Warm-Up in Just 12 Minutes
If you are a singer—aspiring, emerging or established—and if you’ve ever experienced your voice playing up when you least expect it, then you'll be amazed to find that there is an easy way to fix the problem permanently.
Yes, I meant that literally.
Nothing beats a good vocal warm-up just before you hit the studio, stage—or if you like, simply for vocal maintenance.
And so if you are an artiste struggling with issues relating to your voice, this article will offer handy tips to help you slip right through the little vocal hurdles and what's more, I’m also throwing in a complete breathing and vocal warm-up exercise package for good measure.
To get OUTSTANDING results, you only need 12 minutes a day!
The more entrenched in vocal malfunction you are, the more you’ll want to find a solution that not only sorts out the problem, but one that when done regularly and correctly can also propel your vocal talent onto the next level. You’re going to be amazed to find that for only a few minutes a day, just how effective this proven vocal warm-up regimen is going to be for you.
Professionally trained singers will attest that until you’ve experienced the advantages of a well planned vocal warm-up exercise, you won’t quite fully understand what it is you’re missing out on. So let me explain in not so many words. I’ll try to keep this short and sweet so you can get on with the exercises I am giving away for FREE at the end of this article down below.
Now, the only way to develop a clean and well connected tone when you sing is to do your breathing exercise (approximately 5 minutes on my prerecorded tape), prior to your vocal warm-up scales (only 7 minutes on Joett Vocal Drills Vol. 1)—in that particular order—every time you want to warm-up your voice.
You're only one step away from downloading my free voice training package. Quintessentially, here's the deal. I have uploaded a 12-minute vocal warm-up and breathing exercise set along with illustration video content from my classroom... which will show you how it's done. It's easy, quick, and you only need to do this regularly (once a day) to get massive results. It's that simple.

Water and a Bounty of Fruit is a Brilliant Way to Hydrate the Body
Naveed Pervaiz
If you are a singer and you’re wondering what to eat to help you maintain a healthy voice, this article will shed some light on the quintessential topic of hydration and why it is of significant importance to vocalists.
Water consumption is a brilliant way to keep your body well hydrated. Furthermore, try to avoid alcohol and caffeine. Vocal cords vibrate pretty quickly, and so having a proper water balance helps keep them well lubricated. And what’s more, foods that contain large amounts of water are excellent hydration-conscious snacks, including apples, oranges, pears, watermelon, peaches, melons, grapes, plums and bell peppers.
When you feel the sudden urge to clear your throat, try a sip of water or simply swallow to quench the urge to clear. If you feel like you must clear your throat often, I would advise that you get checked by a doctor for such things as acid re-flux disease, or allergy and sinus conditions.
Nothing beats several vocal naps a day, especially during periods of extended use. Find a quiet way to spend quality time ‘with yourself’ rather than talking in a noisy place. The last thing you want to do is talk loudly in noisy areas.
Definitely DON’T smoke. Smoking tremendously raises the risk of throat cancer, and even inhaling secondhand smoke will irritate the vocal cords. In a nutshell, smoking is the fastest way to hell for any vocalist anywhere on the planet. So you bear that in mind.
If you’re in the habit of yelling and screaming, that (in my book) is vocal abuse and misuse all rolled into one package for self-destruction! If your throat feels dry or tired, or your voice is getting hoarse, reduce your voice use. The hoarseness is a warning sign that your vocal cords are irritated.
If you like this article, please be so kind as to share on your social media using the links below. And you can book private voice lessons with me here!

One of THE Most Essential Elements in Developing a Singer's Voice is by Consuming a Rich Musical Diet. Discover the Missing Ingredients!
To listen to the Mica Paris Collection click here!
I talk quite a lot about this in my book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, and in a recent voice note to my predominantly Tanzanian WhatsApp group I talked about the lack of a good musical diet as being one of the reasons why a lot of millennial generation youngsters, especially in Africa, are failing to grow their talent. Cos, whether you like it or not, the kind of music you listen to plays a major role in developing your ear for music and style. Now, I’m not saying you can embody the total singing package by just listening to great music, you’ll still need the training.
So: assuming you ARE already in training, your next step is to soak in all of the great stuff released in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Why? Because back then, they had no computers and therefore it was either you CAN sing or you can forget about a career in music. Up until the 00s a record producer couldn’t correct your pitch and auto-tune your vocals from start to finish to disguise your inability to deliver a simple note. And hey, let’s face it: they made really good music back then.
And so I have decided to publish on a daily basis (if I can keep this up), my recommended old-school essential listens to help you get started with consuming a vibrant, colorful and rich musical diet that comes from a bygone era when the music was SO GOOD it will live forever!
I have already started publishing my recommended list of 70s, 80s and 90s music from disco to pop, soul, R&B, jazz, new jack swing and MORE on my Tumblr here. And from time to time, I shall be blogging some more on this topic. Enjoy!

PRESS RELEASE May 04, 2019 -- Nam Radio, an all African music channel that gives power to the upcoming African artist by creating a platform for those typically lacking media access, proudly present Vocals Quick Fix Africa Project to provide essential training that will equip artists with skills and knowledge to attract their recognition by mainstream platforms.
In collaboration with their in-house artist development brand Talent Showcase Africa (TSA), Nam Radio is launching the first ever radio jingle and social media campaign in Africa that offers a very unique opportunity for listeners across Africa and the Diaspora to connect with a celebrated voice coach for the purpose of getting professional training to help them become better singers.
Joett, voice coach to afro pop superstar Vanessa Mdee and the author of new singers’ handbook 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, is creator of the 'Complete Vocals Overhaul' concept in association with Nam Radio and heads up its pan-African training division.
“When it comes to singing, you are the instrument!” said Joett. “With proper training, almost anyone can learn to sing like a pro—with no pain and no strain.”
Referring to their flagship voice training program, Joett explains: “we have created something that is tailored to the mindset of African singers; a program that doesn’t involve a lot of time and requires absolutely no long-term commitment from the artist whatsoever. It is what it is. A ‘Vocals Quick Fix’ for pre-studio recording sessions and live gigs. Plain and simple! This, I feel, should work well for Africa.”

With private voice lessons conducted by Joett via Skype, Nam Radio brings convenient, affordable, professional help to both upcoming and established artists across the African continent, and the Diaspora.

Record Producers Africa 101: How to Resolve Vocal Issues in Booth
If you are a record producer or an artist manager based anywhere in Africa, and you’ve run into situations where your artist inside the vocal booth is struggling... in that, not only is range, technique and resonance an issue, their vocals quickly tire out and it begins to hinder your recording session, then this article will look at the root cause of the problem and it will also provide you with a quick and permanent solution for your artist. With this, your artist will be able to easily deliver a song in a manner that best suits the style, mood and dimension of the song without an iota of pain, strain or struggle.
First and foremost, let me explain what happens when a vocalist in your vocal booth is hurting and quickly losing their voice during a recording session.
The main reason is because they are putting unnecessary weight on the throat when they sing. The trouble with singing from the throat (shouting) is that the outer larynx muscles are being incorporated into sound production and this inevitably results in the vocal chords taking a rather big beating from all the strain.
And yes, the singer will endure a lot of pain in the process and ultimately they will lose their voice. Needless to say, as a result, you might have to cancel your recording session altogether. Which, clearly, is a waste of time and money.
SOLUTION
I know this is not common practice in Africa. Believe me, I know this firsthand. But it is the ONLY solution to the problem. So let's take a closer look.
The solution to the problem is to have the vocalist undergo a series of special speech-level singing vocal exercises a couple of days before the recording session and on the day of the recording session itself.
Seriously, that’s all it takes to completely re-balance the voice ready for a recording session because it will eliminate the tendency to recruit the outer larynx muscles in sound production.
Your artist, after the vocal warm-ups, will exhibit a more balanced vocal delivery, control, range and resonance devoid of all the strain and pain the singer had previously experienced.
In a previous article I introduced my new voice training program that prepares the voice for the recording studio and the live gig. In that article I talked about this endemic problem afflicting so many singers across the African continent, and whilst giving examples with some success stories I also tried to explain that it really only takes a few hours to re-balance the voice ready for any situation. You can read the full article and also gather some more information on my Vocals Quick Fix Africa Project here.
Vocals Quick Fix (Pre-Studio Recording Sessions & Gigs)
I have created something that is tailored to the mindset of African singers, a program that doesn’t involve a lot of time and requires absolutely no long-term commitment from the artist whatsoever. It is what it is. A ‘Vocals Quick Fix’ for the job at hand. Plain and simple! This, I feel, should work well for Africa.
How It Works
I’ll want to liaise with recording studios and artist management anywhere in Africa. My modus operandi is pretty simple. If you have an artist going into the recording studio and they need help getting their vocals in order, I will gladly work with them for up to an hour prior to the recording session.
And in the case of the live gig set—similarly, I will prepare them for it right before they hit the stage.
Ideally, whether we do this via Skype or I work with you in your country and city, you have the option to book a four-hour program so as to get even MORE value for YOUR money!
The four hours will be evenly spread into an hour-a-day slots, and can be scheduled to begin three days before the recording session, with the fourth and final hour taking place on the day of the recording session OR day of the gig, as it were.
My book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach contains over a hundred articles and tips for singers, and is available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu. It also includes my complete voice training audio product Joett Vocal Drills Vol. 1-7.

You'll find it on Lulu, here!

Q&A Vocals Quick Fix: “How Can I Improve My Voice In A Week?”
If you have been wondering how best to improve your voice in a week, then this article, in tandem with my earlier Vocals Quick Fix post, will look at some very simple yet extremely effective ways to improve your singing voice in just a few hours.
Which means you can nail this in a week with just an-hour-a-day of vocal exercises.
For the purpose of this challenge, let’s say you begin your training schedule on Monday and you want to be done by Saturday.
First, decide what time of day suits you best to allot just an hour for voice training. Make sure that in that time slot you’ve had adequate rest and that you are able to focus on your training. You don’t want to be tired and sluggish. On the contrary, you need to be alert and upbeat. If you’ve come from work in the evening, for example, make sure you’ve had at least forty minutes rest before you begin your vocal exercises.
I always tell my pupils that when the body is tired, and so is the voice.
If you’re going to use vocal exercises from Joett Vocal Drills Vol. 1-4 (which come with my book), make sure you begin your training with a deep diaphragmatic breathing exercise included in my training module.
What these vocal exercises aim to achieve is the total re-balancing of your voice... so singing is easy, and providing you stay consistent with the training your overall progress will be incremental on a daily basis and you'll notice a tremendous improvement in your singing voice very quickly.
If you haven't read my earlier Vocals Quick Fix article, you'll find it here.
