Learn to Sing by Example, to Shorten Your Learning Curve

If you are home-learning how to sing, especially, it is important that you pay attention to examples given, be they on tape or written.

I know it can get a little overwhelming at times to have to take on all of this information, but it does help tremendously in the learning process when you know what needs to be done to achieve your goals.

I’ve noticed a tendency to be a little bit overzealous among you—which is fine, but do your best not to ignore instruction. It costs dearly when you do.

And so when you’re listening to instruction tape or reading, try to make sure you understand what’s being said. And if it isn’t registering, take a pause to listen or read again.

In the case of audio tapes and the vocal exercise demonstration, try to match what is being done. Listen to the voice. Try to analyze the voice demonstrating the exercise. That way, you’ll come away with something that’ll take you a step farther to becoming a better singer.

You’ll find plenty more tips in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, available now in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

Having Trouble Holding Your Notes up the Scales? An Easy Solution

If you’ve been struggling with a squeezed tone when you sing and you’re unable to figure out how to step out of that, rest assured it isn’t at all difficult to knock that out as you might think. In this article I will explain one of the easiest ways to help you hold it in without recruiting your outer larynx muscles into sound production.

Let’s say you’re using one of my prerecorded scales and you have a particular problem with producing MUM the higher you go without recruiting. Here’s how to get around that.

Hum your scale on your way up and then switch to a MUM (pronounced with more of a dumb sound MOM) on your way down.

And you can do the same with a Lip Roll up and a MUM on the way down; or Lip Roll on the way up and the vowel ‘I’ or EEEE on the way down by simply parting your lips to produce ‘I’. Don’t try to manipulate anything. Only part your lips and it’ll happen naturally. This should solve the problem quite easily, providing you stay focused and you breathe properly.

You’ll find plenty more tips in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, available now in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

Joett Studio Speech Level Singing Comprehensive Courses Level 1-4

Since a lot has happened in recent months, what with the publication of my new book and the release of my new voice training audio product to go with it, not to mention, a lot of restructuring in my studio programs as well, I feel the time has come for me to overhaul my entire ‘in-studio’ voice training programs. You may still view the old system here.

However, I won’t be taking the old programs offline because the page has been there a while and is still pulling in considerable traffic.

And what’s more, there are programs in the previous schedule that I intend to keep running.

My newly created modules, however, are mainly for my long-term clientele. And you’ll see that it makes perfect sense.

So here’s the deal

My new voice training programs, tailored to your individual needs, are going to be divided up into four parts and here’s how it works.

FREE 30 Minute Voice Assessments

Before you begin private voice training with me, you are invited to come in for a free half-hour voice assessment session. I will listen to you sing a couple of lines; run you through a breathing exercise; and then put your voice through the scales on the piano and I’ll give you my professional feedback. It’s that simple. And then I'll allocate training slots that are most convenient for you.

Comprehensive Speech Level Singing Course Level 1

This involves private tuition inside my studio. (You’ll find information on my Skype training here). A program comprises a total of 10 hours broken up into one hour per session. In other words, every private session with me runs for one full hour. My studio is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 11am till 8.30pm.

In this program you’ll get an introduction to speech level singing technique with intensive vocal drill workouts on piano to help rebalance your voice, extend your range AND mend the bridges.

Comprehensive Speech Level Singing Course Level 2

In Level 2 we shall continue with the vocal drills on piano for another 10-hour set, but I will be throwing into this program some truly amazing Funky n' Fun Vocal Workouts Parts 1 & 2 to help you develop your musicality.

Comprehensive Speech Level Singing Course Level 3

In Level 3 we shall continue with the vocal drills on piano for another 10-hour set, but I will be throwing into this program more advanced Funky n' Fun Vocal Workouts, again, to further develop your sense of music and to introduce you to some of the main musical vocabulary all musicians should know.

Comprehensive Speech Level Singing Course Level 4

In Level 4 we shall continue with the vocal drills on piano for another 10-hour set, but I will be alternating this with a more jazz, blues, pop R&B vocal workout schedule to help you develop your own unique style.

Please note that Level 4 is also the beginning of your maintenance program. Which means from this point on, you may continue to buy your ten-set programs (optional) in order to maintain your voice and to continue to grow your talent.

FEES

Each set of 10 hours is Tanzania Shillings 310,000 (Three Hundred and Ten Thousand), payable in advance.

Recommended Homework

During your in-studio voice training sessions, at times, I will record segments of your training as you vocalize to the scales on piano. The tapes will then land in your Inbox and you can use them to practice at home. To get an idea, you can listen to one of my pupils in session. Simply click the Joett Case Study #8 widget below.

Furthermore, you may also purchase online, some more extended vocal workouts here. And when you purchase my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, you’ll also receive the English version to my audio product Joett Vocal Drills Vol. 1-7 (includes Breathing Exercise). You can purchase my book in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

Enjoy the incredible benefit of vocal rest after a bout with the flu

unsplash-logoAdi Goldstein
I received a message from one of my online pupils the other day, and the complaint was that their voice wasn’t exactly up to scratch 'in training' after a bout with the flu.

He said that his voice wasn’t as connected as before. And so I quickly recommended that he took some more rest!

Speaking of the flu: I’d had a bit of an episode myself that very same week and although I’d managed to cull it with my ginger and honey concoction in no time at all, I still felt that my voice needed more rest, still. And so I gave myself a week off the scales.

It made a world of difference. When I got back in training yesterday, it was smooth sailing from start to finish—all invigorated and resonating.

So, if you’ve had an episode with the flu, cancel that recording session if you had one; and cancel the vocal exercises. Get some rest. You’ll be glad you did.

You’ll find tons of helpful tips and articles for singers in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, now available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

How to get custom-made vocal exercises to improve your singing

When you want to be able to do your voice training from the comfort of your own home when you don’t have a tutor present, the absolute best way to get this done is to have your piano scales custom-made for you by your vocal coach.

I frequently record my sessions with pupils and so I do know that this method works.

In today’s article, I’ll show you how you too, can go down the custom-made vocal exercises path to outstanding results.

When in session with a pupil inside my voice studio, I would generally run them through extensive vocal exercises, all of which are tailored to their individual ability and their specific needs.

And so, whilst we’re in session, I would intermittently record the runs. This is later delivered to their inbox for use in home learning. And likewise, even when working remotely, when I’ve worked with a pupil I become familiar with their range and what works for them in training, and so I’m able to create vocal exercises tailored to them, which I then mail off to them.

If you’d like me to create some vocal exercise scales for you, and if you’re not a student of mine, the best place to start if you don’t live in Dar es salaam, would be with a free half hour session with me on Skype, which will tell me more about your voice.

You’ll find tons of helpful tips and articles for singers in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, now available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

The Process of Eliminating the Bad Singing Habits Explained

I’ve had this conversation with a lot of my pupils time and time again. When they first step into my studio, what we set out to achieve first and foremost, is to eliminate all of the bad singing habits they have amassed for themselves up to this point. And so quintessentially, it is a process of elimination.

I will throw in a couple of examples.

If your breathing pattern doesn’t allow you to sustain a note, in other words you’re always running out of breath and your voice isn't balanced and tends to fall apart, then that will need to be fixed. In my lessons, not only do we begin each lesson with a breathing exercise, you are trained to breathe correctly through the exercises as well. It is part and parcel of the learning process.

If you have a tendency to put too much weight on your throat thereby limiting your range, again, we eliminate this using speech-level singing technique with the exercises. And there are so many different approaches I would use, depending on the vocal issues at hand.

You’ll find tons of helpful tips and articles for singers in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, now available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

I Want to Order a Bunch of Books for Tanzania. Interested?

As you will have noticed, my new book is not available anywhere in Tanzania. Not even from my own studio in Dar es salaam.

And I do have my reasons.

One of which is, sadly, you stock a bookstore like A Novel Idea on consignment; they sell your product and they'll keep the money. All of it! I have CDs from 2011 I haven't been paid a single dime for... and they have sold the entire stock. And when you ask, they spin you a lot of endless yarns about 'the accountant'. Amazing isn't it?

So: I have a couple of author copies in my studio and that’s it! They're not for sale. They're simply for display. If someone wants to purchase my book, they’ll have to place an order in America to receive the product by regular post.

However, I have decided, that if you would like to be able to place your orders for my book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach without having to buy online, I can take your orders directly from you with deliveries in 2 to 3 weeks.

So, if you are interested in making a local purchase, please feel free to contact me.

For those of you that want to buy online directly, please go to Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Lulu. The latter is more universal in that, they process orders from all over the world—unlike Amazon who are more territorial.

If you like my post and you think it could be of help to a friend, do me a HUGE favor and Share this blog post with others by clicking the Social Links below.

Are You Pushing Your High Notes through Your Nose? Here's How to Spot and Correct Off-Track Vocal Trajectory

unsplash-logoBiruk Masresha
I was watching a video clip of someone on Instagram. The voice sounded alright, but when they pushed the higher notes into the nasal cavity I thought, oops! What’s going on there?

The thing is, if your voice as you ascend into your higher register begins to change trajectory and heads towards your nasal cavity, then there is a problem. Because now you will be trying to take it up via the nose—and hence your tone will be, well—nasal.

Here’s how to ensure that you vocal-train correctly to cancel out the tendency to push your voice into your nose. On the three-tone piano scales which come with my book 101 letters from a Vocal Coach, I’m going to suggest you close your mouth, grit your teeth and simply hum your scales. Another really good alternative is to grit your teeth, part your lips to produce a pharyngeal 'NG' sound through your scales.

In both vocal exercise alternatives you'll feel a sensation in front of your face and the tone will sort of begin to push into your head rather than up your nose. It is an incredibly powerful sensation and it will correct your vocal posture.

You’ll find tons of helpful tips and articles for singers in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, now available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

How to Create the Next Generation of Singers through Private Tuition for Schools, Revealed in New Book

Over the years, I have given private vocal coaching to many pupils from the International School Of Tanganyika and French School in Dar es salaam as an extracurricular activity. But what this has made me realize is that, there are a lot of parents out there that want to put their potentially talented kids into private tuition to learn to sing, something most schools do not provide.

And if I’m honest, even if they did, if you really want to learn to sing the only way to get true results is to work with a vocal coach one-on-one. And I can’t see that happening in a classroom setting, with loads of other pupils attending the same lesson.

Voice lessons require individual attention. After all, you are training both your ear and your voice; and most importantly, when it comes to the voice, everybody is different.

If everybody is training inside the same room all at the same time, something is bound to go amiss. I expound a lot more on this in my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach now available in paperback from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Lulu.

How to Sing Effortlessly in Praise & Worship, Revealed In New Book

I consider myself extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to train so many people from churches and choirs over the years as my way of giving back to the Lord, and it has struck me rather suddenly—as if by revelation from the Lord himself—that my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach couldn’t have come at a better time, and that I should be directing most of my effort and resources to make this book available to churches and choirs around the world.
"Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God." -- Leo Buscaglia
What probably triggered me to think in this direction so suddenly was when I read a review of my book on my Lulu sales page where Claudia Blanton writes:

“101 Letters From A Vocal Coach is a very insightful, charming and entertaining collection of articles, and tidbits, packaged in a warm and heartfelt way. It does not matter if you are professional singer, a part of a choir, or just sing for fun - like I do - you will find something that will strike you as transformational. The study of voice is a lot more complicated than it might seem from the outside, but reading this collection gives you quite a deep view into the techniques, and training required to bring your voice to its full potential. I also loved the linked audio and video content, which gave this book even more depth, and made it a truly useful and practical resource. “ -- Claudia Blanton

What this particular reader had to say resonates resoundingly with the plight of many who want to learn to sing to praise the Lord. In my interaction with singers from churches and choirs, I have encountered complaints many a time in connection with the pain and strain to the voice that afflicts those who spend many hours on end singing in church. My book addresses all of these common issues and shows you how to quickly remedy your situation.

In my new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, you’ll not only find tons of helpful tips and articles for singers, you'll also receive breathing and vocal warm-up exercises delivered directly to your inbox.

3 Simple Steps to Purchasing Online, the Book "101 Letters from a Vocal Coach" in Paperback from Africa

I know this will bring up some concerns regarding geographic purchasing restrictions as is common with Amazon and perhaps even Barnes & Noble, although I’m not too sure of the latter. What generally happens, when you’re based in an African country like Tanzania, you cannot purchase anything from Amazon because Tanzania is barred. Plain and simple!

If I need something from Amazon, I would ask my brother in the US to make the purchase for me and then he’ll mail it down to me. End of story.

Now, about my book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach, the book is on sale on Lulu. This bookstore does not impose such geographic restriction. You can buy from pretty much anywhere across the globe.  And here’s how to go about making your purchase.

Lulu will accept payment by Mastercard, Visa and other major debit/credit cards. If you hold any of those plastics, providing they’re enabled for the internet (check with your bank), you can make your purchase for the book with no problem at all.

And if you'll want to use the PayPal payment option, again, all you need is a debit or credit card to set up a PayPal account if you don't already have one.

However, because they’ll be mailing a physical product—the book in paperback—by regular post, you’ll need to enter a post office box address when you place your order; or in the case where the postman delivers to your door in your country, you’ll enter your physical address.

I hope this helps you purchase my brand new book 101 Letters from a Vocal Coach with relative ease from Africa, so you too can go and enjoy tons of helpful tips and articles for singers.

Diary of a Vocal Coach: A Quick Reflection on the Essence of Teaching

unsplash-logoTra Nguyen
I’m sure you will have noticed that around the world, the most underpaid and quickly forgotten professionals are teachers.

Gosh, I don’t know how that just came out like that. Just speaking my thoughts, I suppose. But in all honesty, it is the truth.

And so, you don’t become a teacher to get rich. You do it because you want to help other people achieve their dreams. You forget about your own dreams and focus more on 'giving' and empowering others. Writing a book as I did, and recording audio training modules is all part of a tutor's quest to help more and more people--even those you never get to meet personally, get ahead. So really, teaching is about giving and not expecting anything in return. We don’t do this for personal gain. There is nothing to gain but good karma. That is my opinion anyway.

My dad was a teacher in the early years, and so was my aunt. My uncle has been a university professor all his life. My sister did teach for a number of years. And so I come from a family of teachers and I love what I do. For me, it's so natural. I don't have to even try. It’s gotta be in the genes.

Diary of a Vocal Coach: Music Marketing Strategies for Indie Artists

Mitchel Lensink

I feel a sense of melancholy and poignancy at the same time, as I post my very first article on the first day of the year. I actually didn’t know what I was going to write about until I stumbled upon a music-related thread in a forum on internet marketing, that asked a fascinating question regarding music marketing strategies. Seeing as many of my readers can relate to this, perhaps it is a good place to start.

Whether you’re new to the world of internet marketing or an established pundit as it were, coming up with music marketing strategies can be quite a puzzle. I would liken it to walking through a minefield of explosive options but not really knowing where to step. If you have been scratching your head trying to figure out how to effectively market your music to sell it online; or if you've tried a few courses and had some abysmal results, this article will aim to help you put your thinking cap on.

Music marketing, and especially selling recorded music online, isn't as simple as you might think. And making money from selling your music can be even more complicated.

If I were you, I wouldn't even THINK of selling anything. I would focus more on branding myself, first.

If you're not a major artist (Ed Sheeran/Rihanna/Beyonce/Bruno Mars/Adele), getting your music out there is painstaking work. It takes planning, strategy, a lot of networking, and a helluva a lot of perseverance.

That being said, what works for me won't necessarily work for you. It is SO incredible how almost every successful artist out there has come up a different path. There seems to be no end in the variety of music marketing strategies out there to help make this happen. They say where there is a will there is a way, but it is also possible that your chances of success may also hinge on your geographical location and target audience.

A really quick way to explain this is to compare an independent artist in Africa, who will quite easily get onto MTV Base Africa and TRACE as an indie artist WITHOUT the backing of a recording label, in the true sense of the word; to the European or US indie artist who didn’t stand a chance in hell to flight on MTV if they weren’t signed to a major or large independent label.

So where do you begin planning your music marketing strategies?

Well, if you’re based on the African continent and your target market is Africa, work with your local market first. That’s how a lot of African acts have built their fan base before taking their music to the rest of the continent.

Again, music marketing strategies that work are not set in stone. If you can find success across the African continent first shot, then good for you.

My dear friend and voice pupil Vanessa Mdee is a shining example of how an independent African artist made her mark on the African continent, and went on to just recently sign a deal with Universal Music, Germany. Please support this amazing African superstar by ordering her debut album Money Mondays here.

If you’re based in Europe or the US; OR you are from Africa but your type of music is not mainstream on the African continent, I can suggest you expand your horizons a bit more by getting in with music industry professionals who are actually looking to sign new acts.

A great place to find a wide array of multi-genre music industry connections from right across the developed world is Music Clout.
